Most people believe that Black Hills gold jewelry is a particular type of gold, but is a design of fine jewelry that is born out of a legend. According to the legend, a French goldsmith named Henri Le Beau became lost some time in the middle 1870s in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Henri delirious from lack of food and water collapsed. Believing he was dying Henri prayed as he fell into a deep sleep. He dreamed deeply and in a vision he saw a mountain stream with grapevines growing on its banks.
Upon awakening,he amazingly felt refreshed and slowly he walked over a rise and found the stream and grapevines just as he had seen them in his dream. Henri was filled with a deep and abiding gratitude and decided to dedicate his life and talents to creating jewelry in the shapes of grape clusters and leaves fashioned in rose, green and yellow gold. The style of jewelry actualized by LeBeau has become a tradition, and today’s jewelry reflects much of its original design—with a wide range of new variations.
Please remember this is a piece of vintage or retro jewelry. Most of it is used and will show some signs of “normal wear” that comes with age. We are very careful not to destroy any patina that may have formed as we think it adds to the beauty of these pieces. Of course you may want to polish or clean off the patina, and that is totally up to you. As we describe each piece if we find any flaws or defects we will point them out in the description. If we have made repairs, we will also note these in the description.
